A cleric was allegedly tortured to death by local people in Swaldhir area of Mardan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the charge of blasphemy.
The police have cordoned off the area to maintain law and order in the area while the body of the deceased scholar has been shifted to a safe place.
According to reports, the country's opposition political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) held a rally in Mardan in favor of the judiciary on Saturday. During the rally, a local religious scholar stood on the stage with the PTI leader and delivered a speech in Pashto. During the address, he appealed to PTI to vote and said that he will not give this leader of Tehreek-e-Insaaf the same status as Sahabi or Prophet but, according to him, this leader is so high for the people of Swaldhir. In this regard, Mardan District Police Officer (DPO) Najeebur Rehman Bagwi while talking to Voice of America said that the name of the person who was killed by the local mob is Nigar Alam. He was the local religious leader while he used to give alms to the people.
The police officer said that the deceased writer was very popular among women and youth.
According to him, on Saturday also in Swaldhir, on the call of a political party, local people held a rally to express solidarity with the judiciary, where speeches were made by various political leaders.
The police officer said that at the same time Nigar Alam uttered some words in support of the local leader of PTI which enraged people and tried to surround him. After the meeting, the matter was disposed of at that time
According to the PO, the said speech given by Nigar Alam later went viral on social media, which enraged the people of the area and attacked Nigar Alam's house.
According to the police, the angry mob entered his house and severely tortured Nigar Alam to death.
DPO Najeebur Rahman said that the police barely took Nigar Alam's body into custody and shifted it to a safe place for post-mortem.
He further said that police has provided security to Nigar Alam's family while there is a heavy presence in the area to maintain law and order.
It should be noted that blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Pakistan, while the law of the country also punishes it with death. There have been incidents in the country in which a mob or an individual took the law into their hands and killed such an individual. Killed who was accused of blasphemy.
Last month, a Chinese engineer was also charged with blasphemy but was released on bail by an anti-terrorism court due to lack of evidence.
